A man of many talents and an unrivaled storyteller, Erwin E. Castillo came from the generation of writers after Gilda Cordero-Fernando, Wilfrido D. Nolledo, and Gregorio C. Brillantes. His childhood in the mountains of Cavite borne him extraordinary imagination and memory, which was later refined and challenged in university and writing programs abroad. His works, "The Firewalkers" and its companion piece, "The Watch of La Diane," were written when Castillo had moved to Manila amid moments of great upheaval in the country: Martial Law, the People Power Revolution, and the establishment of the Fifth Republic.
